Why marry? (or, what are the legal ties of marriage?)

Teegan asks: What does it actually mean to be legally married — in terms of finances, assets, what it means for both people if one does something wrong legally, etc — it seems a lot of people fall into these traps that they don’t even know exist which leads to breakdowns. Being informed of what you’re going into is key but there doesn’t seem to be any help anywhere on all the ‘legal ties’ of marriage. As with any legal matters, always seek professional legal advice from a legal expert, that which I am not. I am however a Commonwealth appointed marriage celebrant, so I have a slither of input on the matter. The issue that rise up however is that different states, and of course, different countries, have different pieces of legislation So as we talk about the legal side of marriage it’s merely my point of view, and your situation may not apply. I’m also writing this on a quite important day for me – I’m in Sydney to marry a couple, who...

Joel and Liezl partied at Sirromet!

Image
Joel and Liezl were dead set on not having just another wedding, but on celebrating the creation of their own marriage. They wanted something real, and meaningful. It happened! Involving myself , Sydney’s Hannah Blackmore photography, Newcastle’s Light Noise Films , Brisbane’s Sirromet Winery and the Gold Coast lads at Gee’d Up Music Josh kicked off our special day by conducting the ceremony exactly as we described to him. He listened to all of our wishes and put this into action for a seamless, light-hearted and most of all, FUN ceremony. He was professional when he needed to be and was always up for a good laugh which relaxed us both. We would highly recommend Josh to anyone who is looking for a celebrant to set a fantastic vibe for the remainder of their wedding day. Casual at casuarina

Kirsten and Scott are two of those disgusting high school sweethearts that just ooze love and affection. I’d love for you to meet them! So I sat down and asked them a bunch of questions about creating their wedding, the whys, the hows, the whats, and thought you’d love it as a blog post. So enjoy! And stick around to the bottom of the post so you can watch their wedding film! The creative team: Pictures by Heart and Colour Photography . Video by Lemon Tree Film House . Venue is Osteria, Casuarina . Styling is by Sunshine and Confetti . Blooms by Elyssium . Kirsten was driven by Blissful Dubs . Sarah Head entertained everyone with her sweet sounds on guitar. I loved everything about Scott and Kirsten’s day, including the fact that they wanted to see each other before the ceremony, for a first look. I can guarantee you that 100% of the couples that see each other before the ceremony, are 200% calmer and cooler in their wedding ceremony. And that’s a verified Josh...

A riverside delight

Image
Simone stood on the banks of the Brisbane River outside of Northshore Harbour Cafe and made the commitment to “fill our home with good food, entertain you with endless impersonations, and to continue our adventures together” and to”be patient when you show me annoying videos from the Internet” while Evan was “excited by the possibilities of what our life together may bring. Excited that I get to share that life with my best friend and my one true love”. It was real, honest, awesome and such a pleasure to be a part of their ceremony. Thanks again for helping to make our day unique, fresh and special. It’s great to see your business booming and lots of other couples reaping the benefits of your skills. You are so upfront and open about the things you stand for, and I really love those things too and they come across in the way you conduct these wonderful ceremonies –  Simone and Evan Brisbane musos,  The Walking entertained us, Jess from  In The...

Where there's a will there's a pun about getting a will

Regular attendees to the sideshow that is this blog will know that I’m on a crazy, under-appreciated, and never really totally understood journey to burrow to the bottom of the wedding universe and see if there’s any meaning left at the bottom of it. The good news is that there is, and it’s up to us to claim it. So today’s blog post has almost nothing to do with weddings, but everything to do with marriage. Because a wedding is one day, and a marriage is about life. The wedding is generally closer to the start, and the will is for the end. Get a will If you read no further then you’ve learned enough for today, go home and put your head down. But if you desire further learnings (I personally recommend Google) I’ll try and flesh it out here. I was invited by the Public Trustee to come and get a will. Mainly because I didn’t have one, should already have one, plus they figured that every day I stood in front of people that need one and maybe if I w...
